Irene Elaine Dark

Memorial visitation for Irene Elaine (Kibbee) Dark, 79, Lawrence will be held 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. She passed away January 25, 2014 at the Arbor, Brandon Woods Health Center.
She was born on July 25, 1935 in Effingham, Kansas to Roy Charles Kibbee and Musie Irene (Christie) Kibbee.
She graduated from Lecompton High School. Irene worked for KP&L – Westar Energy for 40 years in the Lawrence area until her retirement in 1992. She was Past Noble Grand of Lecompton Rebecca Lodge, Past president of the Lawrence Chapter of Alturas International, Past member of Lawrence and Alvamar County Clubs, and a member of the Lecompton United Methodist Church and the Lecompton Historical Society.
She loved to travel, fish and play golf.
She married Robert Elton Dark on June 13, 1954 in Lecompton, KS. He survives of the home.
Other survivors include three sisters, Thelma Bellinger and Dale, Lawrence, KS, Mary Francis Soetart and Bob, Tonganoxie, Dorothy Hetzel and John, LeRoy, KS; sister-in-law, Carol Kibbee, Lecompton; several nieces and nephews and a host of relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Kenneth and Melvin Kibbee and a sister, Lois Hamrick.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Douglas County VNA or the Shriner’s Hospital for Children in Topeka and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

    I had the good fortune to work with Irene and know her and Bob for a number of years. She was a good friend, but more importantly, a very wonderful lady and a pillar in the Lecompton and Lawrence communities. I will miss her.

    I’m very sorry to hear that Irene passed away. I have a lot of great memories of going trick or treating around Lecompton with her when we were kids. We had a lot of fun back then. I’ll never forget those times. She was a truly great lady.

    It was with real sadness that we read of Rene’s passing. I was interested to see that one writer mentioned Halloween when he thought of her. One of my earliest memories of growing up in Lecompton is also about that. I remember coming to your house as a boy of nine or ten and trick or treating. Rene always had the best treats, Snickers as I remember. This, I think, was typical of her generous and fun loving nature. I will always remember her this way,
