Jean L. Mumford

Funeral services for Jean Leola Mumford, 94, Lawrence will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 27, 2014 at the Ninth Street Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. She passed away Thursday, October 23, 2014 at Ottawa Retirement Village in Ottawa, KS. Jean was born July 20, 1920 in St. Joseph, MO the daughter of Robert and Sally (Carter) Burch. She attended Western University, Kansas City and received her degree from the University of Kansas. She was a member of the Ninth Street Baptist Church. She sang in the Cameron White Chorus – 2nd Alto, and was the secretary for BYPU (Baptist Young People’s Union). She was a homemaker; however, she had previously worked at Crown Drug Store where she was the first African American to work at the drug store and she also formerly worked at the Eldridge Hotel. She married Samuel Clyde Mumford February 13, 1945 in Lawrence, KS. He preceded her in death August 25, 2007. Survivors include one son, Michael E. Mumford; and one sister, Roberta Molten. She was also preceded in death by one son, Samuel Robert Mumford February 14, 2001; and one brother, Robert Burch. The family will greet friends from 3 – 5 p.m. Sunday, October 26, 2014 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the American Diabetes Association and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
