Jean Louise Brothers

Jean Louise (Matthews) Brothers, 97, died Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at Pioneer Ridge Assisted Living in Lawrence. Private burial will be held at Vinland Cemetery.

Jean was born January 14, 1917 near Wellington, Kansas the daughter of Francis Arthur and Lois (Page) Matthews. She graduated from Wellington High School in 1935 and taught school for three years before attending business school where she learned clerical and bookkeeping skills. She put these skills to practice working in the accounting department at Beech Aircraft in Wichita during World War II and again in 1952 when she went to work as a fiscal officer for the Greenwood County Welfare Department which later became part of Kansas Social and Rehabilitation Services. After 22 years in administration Jean chose to spend the last eight years before her retirement from SRS in 1983 in front line casework as a social worker.

Jean married Eddie Marion Brothers on September 14, 1940. They made their home in Eureka, Kansas until 1986 when they moved to Lawrence.
Jean was a past-president of Business Professional Women, a member of O.U.R.S. in Lawrence, and a member of the Unity Church. Friends and family will remember Jean for her quick smile, her positive attitude, and her kind and caring heart.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband Eddie on January 15, 1988 and by her son James “Jim” Brothers on August 20, 2013. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Edward Wayne Matthews and Frederick Leonard Matthews.

She is survived by her sister, Margaret M. (Matthews) Davis; her brother, Kermit D. Matthews; her sister-in-law, Roberta L. (Berry) Matthews; her daughter-in-law, Kathleen; her grandson, Edward; and many nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorials in her name to Lawrence Salvation Army or LMHEA Catch A Break and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
