Mass of Christian Burial for Julia Louise Saenz, 62, Lawrence will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. She died January 6, 2013 at her home surrounded by her family.
She was born on November 1, 1950 in Lamar, CO the daughter of Joe and Kathryn “Katie” (Godinez) Saenz.
Julia was an office manager for St. John the Evangelist Catholic School.
She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, where she was active in the Pastoral Council and with the Fiesta.
She married James Michael Self on May 2, 1981 in Great Bend, KS. He preceded her in death on July 5, 2010.
Survivors include one son, James “Michael” Self, Lawrence, one daughter, Kathryn “Katie” Self, Denver, CO; two sisters, Mona (Andy) Webb, Wichita, KS; Monica (Len) Ortega, LaCrosse, KS; four brothers, Rito (Jeannie) Saenz, Topeka, KS; Joe Saenz, Chris (Laura) Saenz, Manuel Palacio all of Great Bend, KS and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Edward Saenz and a sister-in-law, Linda Saenz.
A Rosary will be recited at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. The family will receive friends following the rosary until 7:30 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Oncology Department or to Visiting Nurses Hospice.

I don't know if you'll remember me but I was one of Julia's chemo nurses these past couple of years and also treated her hubby back in 2010. I am a hospice nurse now after being in oncology nursing for 19 years. I just cannot begin to tell you how much Julia has touch my life. I loved caring for her. Her zest for life, love and embracing every day just blessed everyone she came in contact with. I am a better nurse, mom and person because of Julia. She will forever have a place in my heart. You are such a remarkable family I am so very blessed to have gotten to know.

Your mom's obituary this morning brought back such memories of her, your dad, and the two of you at the 7 a.m. Sunday mass at St. John's. I was the cantor during those years when you were altar servers, first Michael, then the two of you together, then just Katie. I grew close to your mom during those years, because as a communion minister she was often part of that Sunday team. I remember her smile, full and warm just like in the obit picture. I was saddened to see that you also have lost your dad. Now you have each other. I just lost my mom in July, also a Julia, and while I had my mom until she was almost 93, I know that no matter their ages, our parents are dear to us and a deep part of who we are.
