Funeral services for Roy L. Johnston, 87, Lawrence, will be 2 p.m., Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran church in Lawrence. Military Honors will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence. He died on Friday, March 5, 2010 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
He was born January 25, 1923 in Lawrence, KS the son of Earl Johnston and Margaret (Elder) Johnston Sanders.
He had been a lifelong resident of Lawrence and had attended Lawrence Public Schools.
Mr. Johnston worked for the University of Kansas as a painter for 25 years. He was a General Electric Appliance Repairman for several years prior to working for KU.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served his country as a Master Sergeant in the 86th Infantry Black Hawk Division, Company I in both the Pacific and European theaters during WWII.
He is a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Dorsey-Liberty Post # 14, American Legion, Odd Fellows, and Elks Lodge # 595, B.P.O.E.
He was married to Mary Beth Pollard on June 10, 1951 in Lawrence. She preceded him in death on February 18, 2007.
Survivors include one daughter, Lisa Lynn Johnston, Lawrence; two sons, Bruce Alan Johnston and wife, Pattie, of Lawrence, KS, and David Wayne Johnston and wife, Melody, of Oak Hill, VA; one sister, Earlene Bailey, of Oskaloosa, KS. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Julie Ann Johnston, and two sisters, Betty Jean Johnston and Carol Griffin; and one brother, Fred Johnston.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Dorsey-Liberty Post # 14, American Legion or the Charity of Donor’s choice and sent in care of the mortuary.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p..m. Sunday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary and from 1 p.m., until service time on Tuesday at the church.
