AJ (Adam James) Rain, 44, of Lawrence, Kansas, died peacefully on his own terms on July 2, 2026. Born in 1981, AJ found a love of music early in life. He was an accomplished classical and jazz saxophone player and completed a 4-year tour as a musician in the United States Marine Corps. AJ was a jazz enthusiast who could be found listening to the music of David Sanborn, Michael Brecker, and other jazz legends on any given day.
AJ completed a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from Western Illinois University and worked as a beloved and admired academic advisor both in the Undergraduate Advising Center and in the School of Education at the University of Kansas for many years. After completing a third degree from the University of Kansas (Master of Social Work), he pursued a career as a mental health therapist.
In addition to his love of music, AJ enjoyed snuggling with his majestically clumsy pit bull, LJ, and sharing time with loved ones. He was known for his authenticity, integrity, compassion, moments of silliness, and passion for lifelong learning.
AJ leaves behind his partner of nine years, Janet Hart of Lawrence, Kansas, his daughter, Jade Rain of Jacksonville, Florida, and his brother, Jeremy Busard of Joy, Illinois.
A memorial gathering will be held on Wednesday, August 19, at 2:00 p.m. at the Warren-McElwain Funeral Home.
