Alfred Van Meter

Funeral services for Alfred L. Van Meter, 76, Lawrence, KS, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 23, 2010 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.  Burial will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Pleasant Grove. He died on Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at his home.

He was born February 17, 1934 in Lovewell, Kansas the son of William E. and Mary Rebecca (Muckey) Van Meter.

Mr. Van Meter worked for Lawrence Paper Company for a number of years.  He was a member of the National Rifle Association.

He married Joan Herschell in 1954 in Clinton, Kansas.  She preceded him in death on March 7, 1984.

He is survived by his daughter, Rhonda Nemecheck of Riverside, Missouri; a sister, Donna Landreth of Lawrence; four grandchildren, Jason Nemecheck, Shelly Nemecheck, Jacob Van Meter and  Kyle VanMeter, and four great-grandchildren, Brittany Nemecheck, Ellie VanMeter, Storm Pobjoy, and Tabitha Pobjoy.  He was preceded in death by his son, Raymond Van Meter in 2002, two sisters and his parents.

The family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m. Sunday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
