Alyce was born in Wellington, Kansas on April 24, 1914, the daughter of Arthur David Zook and Ruth Cook Zook. The parents, along with Alyce and her brother and sister moved to Lawrence in 1928 and resided on Massachusetts Street in the 1700 block across from the street car barn, now On The Rocks store. The move to Lawrence was so that the children could attend the University of Kansas after finishing high school.
After graduating in 1936 with a degree in Sociology, Alyce took a job in Wichita, working with disadvantaged youths. She later worked at the Lawrence Public Library, and the KU Printing Service.
She married John R. Standing on June 26, 1938.
Survivors include two sons, Jon Standing (Mary) and Steve Standing (Cheryl). Alyce was Grandmother to Alec Drown, Jeff Standing, Barry Flanagan, and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her former husband, her brother Franklin and her sister Helen.
Alyce loved traveling with the Topeka Travel Club and Richard’s Fun Time Tours. She also enjoyed birding, collecting recipes and cooking and socializing with her many friends through the years. She was a very caring person and her enthusiasm was contagious. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.
