Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence, KS. Betty passed away on Friday, January 9, 2026, at Pioneer Ridge Assisted Living in Lawrence, KS.
Betty was born on April 12, 1934, in Kirksville, MO, the daughter of Emory and Lucille (Ashford) St. Clair. Betty and her husband, Frank L. Alexander, married on September 27, 1951, in Downing, MO, shortly after graduating from high school. Betty and Frank relocated to Lawrence, KS in 1953 where they established their home for approximately 7 decades. Betty was a homemaker and home manager until the children grew up and left home in the late 70s. She then earned her Certified Insurance Service Representative designation and worked with Frank as an Office Manager and customer service representative of the family insurance agency. They worked as a team to help their clients and friends protect both life and property against unforeseen risks and to make their quest for a secure future a reality. They were both champions of the “little guy” and were dedicated to making their lives better. Betty fondly remembered the trips that she and Frank were able to take to insurance conventions and seminars across the country. After 25 years, Betty retired in 2003 to enjoy their new “dream home” in the country.
Betty was active within the Lawrence community as a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church where she served in a number of roles within the church and taught Sunday School for a several years. Betty and Frank were also founding members of the Happy Time Squares square dance club in 2005, and she served as President of the club in 2008 and again in 2017. In their roles as club officers, Betty and Frank organized and conducted lessons for individuals to learn square dancing and attended both state and national square dance events across the country. Square dancing was a key activity they enjoyed for years, both for the exercise and the time they were able to spend with their friends. Unfortunately, this activity dwindled significantly when Frank preceded her in death on November 11, 2021.
Survivors include her son, Patrick L. (Teri) Alexander, Paul’s wife Marsha, daughter, Sharon L. (Roger) Stumfoll, three grandchildren; Michael (Melissa) Alexander, Craig (Kristi) Alexander, and Leanna Stumfoll; five step grandchildren, and fifteen great grandchildren.
Betty was also preceded in death by her parents, and son Paul Alexander, who passed on October 5, 2025.
The family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, January 15, 2026, at the Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence, KS.
