A visitation for Betty Jean Lewis, 90, of Lawrence, will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 12, 2026, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. A private family burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence. Betty passed away peacefully on October 3, 2026, at Neuvant House in Lawrence.
Betty was born on October 29, 1935, in Mulberry, Arkansas, to Billie and Mildred (Almon) Gilbreth. She graduated from Eudora High School and, on her 18th birthday, October 29, 1953, married the love of her life, Joseph L. Lewis, Sr., in Eudora, Kansas. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, hard work, and love.
A devoted member of the Assembly of God Church, Betty found joy in serving others. Whether preparing meals, baking treats for church gatherings, or quietly helping where she was needed, she gave generously of her time and talents. She had a deep appreciation for life's simple pleasures, from watching sunrises and sunsets to taking long drives and tending her garden. An avid reader of classic literature, Betty also expressed her creativity through sewing, lovingly making clothing and costumes for her children and family members. Her home and garden reflected the care and dedication she brought to everything she did.
Above all, Betty treasured her family. She delighted in time spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, creating memories that will be cherished for generations. Her gentle spirit, unwavering devotion, and loving presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her sons, Joseph Lewis, Jr. (Kim) and Brian Scott Lewis (Cathi); her daughter, Lisa Gay O'Neill; seven grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Lee Gilbreth; and her beloved husband of 72 years, Joseph, who passed away on November 29, 2025.
The family suggests memorial contributions to The University of Kansas Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (KU ADRC) and may be sent in care of the mortuary. Please reference “Charles A. Garney Alzheimer’s Opportunity Fund” in memo.
