Beverly B. Bahnmaier Van Dyke 93 died February 18, 2022, at Brookside Retirement Community in Overbrook, KS. The only child of George M. and Vesta (Slavens) Bahnmaier, she was born February 26, 1928, in Lawrence, KS. She grew up on a farm with no running water or electricity west of Lecompton. A 1946 graduate of Lecompton High School, she attended Ottawa University graduating with a degree in elementary education in 1950. She later earned a master’s degree from the University of Kansas.
While at Ottawa, she met William Van Dyke of Kalamazoo, MI. They were married June 4, 1950. They moved to Lawrence where they lived for the rest of their lives. Beverly was an elementary school teacher for USD 497, teaching at New York, Woodlawn, and East Heights schools. After retirement she enjoyed volunteering at Lawrence Memorial Hospital and caring for her grandchildren.
Beverly was a member of the Lecompton United Methodist Church, Autumn Club, the Lecompton Historical Society, and the Douglas County Retired Teachers Association.
Beverly is survived by her daughter Joan (Mark) Workman, Lawrence, son Nelson (Donna) Van Dyke, Topeka, grandsons Brian (Summer) Workman, Aurora, CO, Kevin (Ariel Hecke) Workman, Columbus, OH, Sean Van Dyke, Arvada, CO, and great-grandson Miles Workman, along with many cousins she was very close to. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bill, daughter Barbara, son David, and granddaughter Whitney Van Dyke.
A memorial service is planned for a later date. The family suggests contributions to the Lecompton Historical Society 640 E Woodson, Lecompton, KS 66050.
