Brian Jones

Memorial Services for Brian Vernon Jones, 60, Lawrence, KS will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 8, 2009 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.  Private inurnment will be at a later date in Portland, NY. He died on Thursday, March 05, 2009 at Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community in Lawrence.

He was born on August 18, 1948 in Westfield, NY, the son of Vernon H. & Violet E. Cornell Jones.  He lived for many years in Akron, OH before moving to Lawrence in 2005.

He was a 1974 graduate of Michigan State University with a B.A. degree in mathematics. In 1977, he received a teaching certificate from Eastern Michigan University.

Mr. Jones was also a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War era.

He worked for many years as a computer programmer for First Energy in Akron, OH.

Mr. Jones was a member of the Woodland United Methodist Church in Akron and served as their treasurer and as a member of the choir. He organized and competed in chess tournaments in southern Michigan and northern Ohio.

Survivors include his mother, of the home, a brother, Stephen A. Jones of Detroit, MI, two sisters, Judy K. Taylor of Ypsilanti, MI, Cindy Johnson of Lawrence, two nieces and four nephews.

The family suggests memorials in his name to the College of Education at Eastern Michigan University and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
