Funeral services for Charles Arthur Whatley, 91, Lawrence will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. He passed away Friday, March 30, 2018 at his home.
Charles was born January 20, 1927 in London, England, the son of William and Dorothy (Ware) Whatley. He attended the University of London.
Charles served in the Royal Navy on the HMS Glory during WWII.
Charles married Hilda Costella on June 20, 1948 in Morden, Surrey, England. They immigrated to the United States in 1957. Hilda preceded him in death in 2006.
Charles met Frankie Enfield at a dance and shared eleven years of companionship. They were never apart since the day they met.
Charles founded the ChaDa Sales company in 1971. ChaDa Sales is now a three generation company in Lawrence.
He enjoyed golf, dancing, gardening, crossword puzzles, cards, and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of Lawrence Country Club for years.
Survivors include his daughters Christine Copp of Lawrence and Janet Christiano of Huntington Beach, CA; son, Marc Whatley of Lawrence; grandchildren Charles Copp, Jessica Collins, Francesca Whatley, and Tony Whatley of Lawrence, and John Christiano and Jennifer Christiano of Austin, TX.
The family will greet friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 3 at the mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to Van Go Arts, 715 New Jersey St. , Lawrence, KS, 66044, and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
