Charles J. “Jamie” Schwartz, 1942-2015 – Lawrence, Kansas
Charles Jameson “Jamie” Schwartz was born on October 2,1942, in Salina, Kansas, the oldest son of Mary Ann (Jameson) and Albert John Schwartz. Jamie died peacefully at his home in Lawrence, Kansas surrounded by family on Sunday, February 8, 2015. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Dianne; son John and wife Anne of Fairway, Kansas; and son Matt of Austin, Texas. He is also survived by brother John of Portland, Oregon; sister Peggy Wallert of Baldwin, Kansas; brother A.J. of Wichita; brother Norb of Salina; sister Mary Boman of Bonner Springs; and sister Ethel Brightwell of Overland Park. He was preceded in death by brother, Fred in 1970.
Jamie was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School in Salina, Kansas, and attended the University of Notre Dame on a National Merit Scholarship. He served in both the US Army and Navy and graduated from Marymount College, Salina, Kansas in 1969.
Jamie married Dianne Zoglo of Denver, Colorado, in 1970. He worked at the Eisenhower Presidential Library in Abilene, Kansas, before attending Kent State University for graduate studies. He directed the Citizenship Center at Rock Springs Ranch in Geary County for the Kansas 4H Foundation. He was elected to the Kansas Legislature representing Junction City and Geary County Kansas. The family moved to Topeka where he worked in the office of Governor John Carlin as a Legislative Liaison. Jamie was appointed by the Governor to his Cabinet serving as Secretary of Economic Development. After leaving state government Jamie worked for the Kansas Savings and Loan Association and later ran a successful consulting business. Upon retirement he and Dianne moved from Topeka to Lawrence where Jamie continued working, volunteering as the Treasurer of the Kansas Coalition Against the Death Penalty, volunteering as an election poll worker, and serving as the bookkeeper of his homeowners association. During this time he continued his lifelong business as a nationally known stamp and coin dealer.
Jamie loved his family, especially the large number of cousins who would frequently gather at the family home in Salina. He had a way of easily making friends – classmates, neighbors, co-workers – and he treasured his connections to all of them. Jamie loved to read, to sing, to learn, and to laugh. Ultimately Jamie will be remembered as a loving husband, a kind and inspirational father, a cherished cousin, a dedicated uncle, and a deeply-loved friend to so many people.
A memorial service will be held at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Salina, Kansas, on Saturday, February 14, 2015, at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Salina.
