Danny E. Samuels

d. July 15, 2017

Danny E. Samuels, 73, of Topeka, passed away Saturday, July 15, 2017 at Midland Hospice. He was born January 1, 1944 in Emporia, KS the son of Paul and Edith I. (Newman) Samuels. He moved to Lawrence as a child. Growing up the son of a waitress, he was always a generous tipper. He was a graduate of Lawrence High School and loved his Lawrence ties. Danny worked at the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant and for over three decades for the Topeka Transit Authority as a bus and trolley operator with over 26 years of accident free driving. He served on several boards of directors of different charities where he worked tirelessly to raise money for people with special needs and those living in poverty. He also served in many different unions in various roles, such as a legislator representative for the AFL-CIO and the Topeka Federation of Labor representing the needs of 21 local unions.

He married Judy Reeves on April 8, 1967 in Eudora, KS. She survives of the home. Celebrating their 50 th anniversary was a treasured memory – especially when Danny told everyone to “take notes” and then proceeded to kiss his bride for a very long time.

Other survivors include his two sons: John (Jessica) Samuels, Topeka; David (Leslie) Samuels, Tecumseh; two sisters, Serena Anderson, Lawrence; Sharon Samuels, Winter Haven, FL; and four adored grandchildren: Grace, Mackey, Dalton and Evalyn along with many beloved nieces and nephews and all the friends he touched throughout the years. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Gary, Alvin, Richard (Dick), and Larry; and sister Norma Jean.

Danny enjoyed coaching and watching his sons and grandkids, Grace and Mackey, play sports. He had many special memories bird hunting with his sons. Danny drove Judy to many antique stores and flea markets on their vacations. Chatting it up with his Liars Club friends and playing poker made his day.

Danny supported many non-profits by raising money and giving his time to support Let’s Help, the United Way, Special Olympics and many more. His charitable spirit knew no limits. The family suggests memorial contributions in his name to Douglas County Special Olympics or Midland Hospice House and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Or roll-up your sleeves and volunteer at your charity of choice.

A celebration of life will be held at IBEW Local Union Hall #304 at 3906 NW 16 th Topeka, KS on Friday, July 21st, 6-9 p.m.
