David "Dave" Eugene Umscheid

David Eugene Umscheid, (Dave to his friends), 71, of Eudora, Kansas took the holy road on October 7, 2026, at his residence. He passed away like he lived his life, peaceful and with a positive attitude.

David was born on August 12, 1955, in Manhattan, KS, the son of Duane and Rita (Unterberger) Umscheid.

David married Sheryl Ann Chmidling on May 29, 1982 at the Fitch wildlife reserve north of Lawrence, Kansas and she survives at the home.

Other survivors include his brother-in-law, Tim (Rosemary Rice) Chmidling, aunts, Freda Ebert and Cleta Dixon, uncles, Jerry Unterberger and Tom (Helen) Unterberger. David was preceded in death by his parents.

Dave started his working career as an automotive mechanic after attending vo-tec and worked for his father at Duane's Garage in Topeka. He then worked at Roaches hardware for a short stint before moving to Pittsburg Ks and worked for the food services at the University in Pittsburg. He then started working at KU when moving back to this area in 1980 and worked in the special services department for 40 years before retiring in December of 2019. His work at KU dubbed him the “blind guy” as he repaired and rebuilt venetian blinds and installed window coverings for the many buildings on the KU Lawrence campus.

Dave loved music, camping, bicycling, motorcycling, and a good dry gin martini. Dave had the philosophy that you have to ride in the rain sometimes to really appreciate the fine days. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Memorial contributions in David’s name may be made to The Huntington’s Foundation in Wichita Kansas.

There are no formal services scheduled per Dave’s request. A celebration of life will most likely have live music, some munchies and be a good time.
