Funeral service for Dorris Elaine Lanksbury, 90, Lawrence will be held 3p.m. Sunday, July 18, 2010 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Mrs. Lanksbury died July 9, 2010 at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor.
She was born on December 29, 1919 in Lawrence, Kansas the daughter of Jesse E. and Jessie Ethel (Martin) Markley. She graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in Lawrence and attended Lawrence Business College. She worked for the Department of the Navy, in Washington D.C. from 1940 to 1946. She later worked at the Air Transport Command in Hawaii. She also worked for the Navy in Phoenix, AZ and Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant, in DeSoto, KS where she retired from Federal Service as an executive secretary. She then worked for Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Topeka and subsequently for Sears in Lawrence. She was a member of the Lawrence Gem & Mineral Club and the First Presbyterian Church.
She married Robert C. Lanksbury on November 9, 1946 in Honolulu, Hawaii. They later divorced.
Survivors include one son, Roger D., and wife, Vicky, Naperville, IL; three brothers George Markley, Jacob Markley, David Markley, all of Ottawa, KS; one sister, Wilda Robbins, Lawrence, KS; two grandsons, Christopher, Raymore, MO, Brandon, Naperville, IL; and two great grandchildren, Kendra and Austin of Raymore, MO. She was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Markley and one sister, Evelyn Musick.
The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the mortuary.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in her name to Heart of America Hospice or the American Heart Association, and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
