Funeral services for Douglas (Doug) L. Beene will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 3, 2017 at Plymouth Congregational Church. Inurnment at Pioneer Cemetery will be at a later date. He passed away Tuesday, March 28th at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born January 4, 1934 in Lawrence, KS, the son of Douglas Beene and Minnie Beene.

He graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1952 and was an Eagle Scout and later a Scout Master. He graduated from KU in 1956 with a BS in Geology. He married Virginia Lee Certain on June 19, 1955 in Dodge City, KS.

He worked for 46 years with the Kansas Geological Survey. He also worked as a volunteer on the bench with KU Basketball for 42 years, 32 of which he was the Official Scorer. He also volunteered in various officiating duties at the Kansas Relays for 41 years.

He was a member of First Christian Church from 1946- 1998 where he served as Deacon, Elder, Treasurer and Trustee. He was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church from 1998 to present where he was involved in Stephen Ministry. He enjoyed working outside, puzzles, traveling and was an avid fan of KU athletics – ROCK CHALK!

He is survived by two brothers: Don and wife Ellen Beene of Tucson, AZ and Daryl and wife Debbie Beene of Lawrence; three daughters: Carolyn and husband Norman Johannsen, Bemidji, MN, Sharon and husband Victor Gardner, and Leslie and husband Steve Ahlert, Lawrence; one son Steve and wife Virginia Beene, Olathe, KS; ten grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife and his parents.

The family will greet friends from 5-7 Sunday, April 2 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to Stephen Ministry in care of Plymouth Congregational Church.
