Dr. Michael Alan Well

September 24, 1941 – April 23, 2025

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Michael Alan Well, beloved husband, devoted father, and cherished grandfather. Dr. Well passed away on April 23, 2025, at LMH Health with his loving family by his side.

Dr. Well was born September 24, 1941, in Palmyra, Missouri, the only son of Dr. Julius William and Geraldine (Vance) Well. Growing up in Palmyra, he embraced his small-town community, forging friendships that would endure throughout his lifetime. He was active in high school athletics, including football and basketball, and graduated from Palmyra High School before attending Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri.

Following in the footsteps of his grandfather, father and uncles, Michael pursued a career in medicine leading him to Northwestern University Medical School. After completing his medical education, Dr. Well proudly served his country in the United States Army as a medical doctor, achieving the rank of Major while stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Upon completing his military service, Dr. Well chose Lawrence, Kansas as the place to establish his urology practice and raise his family. He served the Lawrence community with dedication and compassion for over 40 years, becoming a respected and influential member of both the medical community and the broader Lawrence community.

In 1986, Michael married Cindy Longo, and together they shared 39 wonderful years, building a life centered on their families, breeding and raising champion Rhodesian Ridgebacks, and enjoying time with friends. Michael took tremendous pride in his children, grandchildren, and his champion show dogs.

While staying true to his Missouri roots, he also became a Kansas sports enthusiast. Michael became an avid supporter of Lawrence athletics, particularly Lawrence High School teams and the KU Jayhawks, holding season tickets to Allen Fieldhouse for many years.

Beyond his medical practice, Dr. Well was the long-time owner of the Clinton Store, where he took pleasure in operating the small general store and especially cherished his interactions with employees and customers. Dr. Well could often be found making his “rounds,” driving around Lawrence and the surrounding areas to check on new developments and building projects, watching with pride as his once small college town flourished during his many years as a resident.

Michael is survived by his wife Cindy; his children Andrew Well, Matt Well, Lindsay Curtis Kindem; and his adored grandchildren Isabella Well, JW Well, Brady Well, Hudson Kindem, and Sally Kindem.

The family suggests memorials in Michael’s name to your most treasured humanitarian organization in his name, in lieu of flowers, and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th St., Lawrence, KS 66044.

A Celebration of Life for Michael Alan Well will be held on September 20 th from 2:00 ~ 4:00 pm at the Lawrence Union Pacific Depot.
