Eleanor Pack Gage

A Celebration of Life for Eleanor Pack Gage, 89, Lawrence, will be held at 2:00 on Sunday, March 9 at the First Presbyterian Church, 2415 Clinton Pkwy, Lawrence. She died peacefully on February 14, 2014, at Windsor of Lawrence.

Eleanor was born January 9, 1925, in Kansas City, KS, the daughter of Claude and Edith (Robb) Pack. She graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1943. She attended MacMurray College and Kansas University where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. She graduated from KU in 1947 and taught elementary art for 2 years.

Eleanor married John Cutter Gage on June 16, 1950 in Kansas City, KS. They resided in Fairway and Mission Hills, Kansas while raising their 3 children.

Eleanor was an active member of the community and served as a Girl Scout leader, a docent at the Nelson Atkins Art Museum, and was a member of the Junior League, PEO & Sit ‘n Stitch. In 1978 Eleanor and John moved to their beloved farm just east of Lawrence. They joined the First Presbyterian Church and Eleanor demonstrated her strong faith by serving on Session, Stephen Ministries, as a prayer group leader, and by participating in mission trips. Along with John she hosted several all-church picnics and pig roasts at their farm. She was a member of garden club and a master gardener as evidenced by her beautiful yard and extensive flower gardens. She loved the outdoors, fishing, swimming and “walking in the woods.” Eleanor was devoted to her family and friends. She loved entertaining and sharing her fabulous cooking with all.

Eleanor was predeceased by John, her husband of 50 years, on June 6, 2000. Other survivors include one daughter; Claudia Valentine-Fjone, and husband, Nick, of St. Louis, MO; two sons; John B. Gage & David F. Gage, and wife Mary, all of Lawrence, KS, one sister; Barbara Heiser of Laurie, MO, ten grandchildren; Cutter Gage, Courtney Gage, Jason Valentine & wife Aleke, Meghan Valentine, Heather Fjone, Eric Fjone & wife Michelle, Jacob Gage, Travis Gage, Amanda Gage & Stephanie Gage.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to First Presbyterian Church or Alzheimer’s Association and may be sent in care of Warren McElwain Mortuary.
