Elizabeth “Liz” (De la Cruz) Romero, 91, passed peacefully on November 19, 2025. She was born on December 3, 1933, to Augustin and Nicholasa De la Cruz in Osawatomie, KS. Liz was preceded in death by her husband, Valentin Romero; her parents; her brothers, Salvador, Albert, Pete and Jessie De la Cruz; sisters, Florence Reese, Carmen Fairman, Minnie Medina and Pauline Wilson.
She is survived by her sister, Juana Fonseca of Gardner, KS; her children, Cecilia (Andy) Godwin of Leawood, KS, Chris (Jeanne) Romero, Rueben Romero, Sarah Tunget (John Krones) all of Lawrence. She is survived by nine grandchildren, Dustin Koehler (Jessica Slawa), Winfield, Illinois, Kristy Blanck (Kenny Vorhies), Michaela (Garret) Gerstenecker, Nick (Katie) Romero, Ray (Amanda) Hall all of Lawrence; Justen, Joseph and Della Romero of Topeka and Eryn Godwin (Shawn O’Neil) of Roeland Park, KS and eleven great grandchildren, a great grand dog, Barkley and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews.
Liz loved baking, was an avid reader, enjoying coloring, watching her Jayhawks, Chiefs, Notre Dame football and basketball and old movies. She volunteered at the St. John’s Mexican Fiesta making tamales and enchiladas. She was a stay-at-home mom who always had homemade cookies in her cookie jar. Her biggest joy was family celebrations and making tamales with her multigenerational family.
The family of Liz Romero wishes to offer their gratitude to the Lawrence Memorial Hospital ICU unit nurses and Dr. Ralph Park for the loving care Liz received while at LMH.
Memorial contributions maybe made to St. John’s Mexican Fiesta or to the St. John’s Mexican Fiesta Scholarship and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
Mass of Chrisitan Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 5, 2025, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church with burial to follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Lawrence. The family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, December 4, 2025 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary, with a Rosary being recited at 6:00 p.m.
