Our country has lost another precious World War II Veteran.
Visitation for Elvin E. Davison, 83, will be Tuesday, February 23, 2010 from 6-8 p.m. at Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th St. Lawrence, KS. Cremation will follow. No funeral services are planned. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
Mr. Davison died February 18, 2010 at his home.
He was born in Lawrence, Kansas on January 18, 1927 to Leslie and Beatrice “Mills” Davison. He attended Lawrence Public Schools and was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church.
He joined the Marine Corps in January 1944 and served with the Fourth Marine Division in the Pacific Theater of War during World War II. He was the first wave of Marines to land at Iwo Jima. He observed the raising of the flag and was severely wounded the following day.
On April 30, 1947, he married Elaine L. Marsell. They shared nearly 63 years of marriage. She survives, of the home.
Mr. Davison was a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 852, Lawrence. He was a Golden Eagle Member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 309 and a member of the American Legion 14, both of Lawrence.
A lifelong resident of Lawrence, he retired from Farmland Industries in 1989 after 35 years.
Other survivors include daughters Marilyn Grant, Lawrence, and Jennifer Hathaway and husband Darrell of Overbrook, and son Tom Davison from Lakewood, CO; grandchildren Virginia (Jeff) Sims, Lori (Randy) Stanley, Tracy Bruce, T.J. (Sarah) Davison, Dee Hathaway, Miranda (Heath) Cummings, Chayton Hathaway, and step-granddaughter Andrea Halsted; great-grandchildren Cody Bruce, Dara Mole Baskins, Melissa and Rebecca Mole, Brett and Brooklyn Hadl, and Layla Cummings.
Preceded in death by his parents, three brothers Vernon , Bill and Duane, and his sister Betty.
Also preceded in death by his son-in-law Dr. David J.W. Grant.
He will be remembered as a very loving husband and father who so enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-children, and spending his summers in the mountains of Colorado.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials in his name to the VFW Post 852, 138 Alabama, Lawrence, KS 66044.
