Estel “Ted” Coulter

Funeral services for ESTEL “TED” COULTER, 84, Lawrence, will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 26, 2010 at First United Methodist Church in Lawrence.  Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.  He died Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Ted was born July 14, 1925 in Waynoka, Oklahoma, the son of Marvin and Lenora (Davison)
Coulter.

He attended school in Waynoka graduating from Waynoka High School in 1943.  He received a bachelor of arts in 1948 from Northwestern Oklahoma State College in Alva, OK.  Ted received a master of science degree in administration in 1953, and a specialist in education degree in 1967 from Fort Hays State University, Hays, KS.

He was in the field of education for fifty-four years as a teacher, coach and reading consultant.  He taught students at the elementary, junior high, high school, junior college and college levels and served as elementary school principal. Some of his research had been presented at National Meetings and published with the National Reading Association. Through the years Ted served as a reading consultant on several Indian reservations in the Northwest and Southwest United States. He retired in 1991 as a teacher and Director of Reading at Haskell Indian Nations University.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.  He was past president and member of the KS College Reading Association, Rice County Teachers Association (1953-1954), Rooks County Teachers Association (1952-1953), Coordinator of Sectional meeting of the KS State Teachers in Hutchison, KS (1965-1966).

Ted enjoyed the outdoors, enjoyed hunting and fishing as well as being an avid golfer.  In recent years he organized golf tournaments for golfers 60 years and older.  He had a passion for working with people and organizing events.

He married Shirley Steinle on April 25, 1952 at the Wilson Methodist Church in Wilson, Kansas, she survives of the home.

Other survivors include: one son, Marvin Coulter and wife, Beverley of Crowder, TX; two daughters, Jill Hutchinson and husband, Michael of Kansas City, KS, Sylve Coulter of Topeka, KS; eight grandchildren, Kevin Coulter, Darrell Coulter, Mason Coulter, twins Amanda and Dalton Coulter, Lynnette Berta, Jason Ellison, Nichole Ellison and one great grandson, Anthony Berta.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family suggests memorials in his name to Alzheimer’s Association, Douglas Co. Senior Services or Haskell Indian Nations University Scholarship Fund and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

The family will greet friends from 7-8 p.m. on Friday, June 25, 2010 at the Mortuary and will also greet friends an hour before the service at the church on Saturday.
