Evelyn Sue Neustifter, 87, of Eudora, Kansas passed away on December 26, 2025 at KU Medical Center. She passed peacefully surrounded by the love of her family.
A visitation will take place at 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm with a Celebration of Life to follow on Wednesday, December 31, 2025 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary—Eudora Chapel; 1003 John L. Williams Drive Eudora, Kansas 66025.
She was born on September 20, 1938, in Sylamore, Arkansas to Harvey and Dixie (Covey) Pitts. She grew up in Sylamore and moved to Eudora in the early 1950’s as her father became employed at the Sunflower Ammunition plant.
Sue began her career in the Register of Deeds office for Douglas County in 1959. Working for the first 14 years as a clerk and deputy clerk before becoming elected in 1972 as the official Register of Deeds. She proudly and successfully held the title for 30 years before retiring in 2002. She was a trailblazer for women as she was elected to a county wide office at a time when virtually all other elected positions in Douglas county were held by men. Her leadership, resilience, and unwavering integrity helped set the tone for generations of women who would follow her into public service.
Sue is survived by her devoted only child Sandra (Joe) Reece, her son-in-law Terry Hull, her beloved grandchildren Paige (Andrew) Coffelt, Kaila (William) Lawrence, Tyler (Bailey) Hull. She is also survived by her treasured great grandchildren, Vada, Jameson, Vienna, Molly and Lenora. Sue is also survived by a cherished sister-in-law Gerene Pitts and her nieces Pam (Steve) Moore and Marshia (Jack) Vance whom she adored deeply.
She was preceded in death by her husband William Neustifter; her brother Alvin Pitts; her nephew James Pitts; her parents Harvey and Dixie Pitts, and her mother-in-law Mildred Neustifter.
Sue will be remembered as a classy and elegant woman whose stoic strength guided her through her many experiences. Her passion for serving her community was evident in the countless hours she dedicated to her church, its food pantry, and the Lawrence and Eudora Lions Club. Above all, her greatest blessings in life were her family, whose love and presence brought her immense joy. Her legacy of grace, community and passion will continue to inspire her family, friends, and community as well as anyone who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sue’s name to the Eudora Lions Club, reflecting her lifelong commitment to community service and helping others.
