Funeral services for Felicia Dawn Shockey, 38, of Lawrence, Kansas will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 25, 2018 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence, Kansas. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence. She passed away on August 14, 2018 in Topeka, KS.

She was born on May 20, 1980 in Mabank, Texas the daughter of Barry Glenn Herrin who preceded her in death in 2006. Her siblings include; Stacey Spencer, Texas; John Davenport, Texas; Gregory Davenport, Texas; Jonathan Herrin, Texas; and Chief Warrant Officer Jeffery Herrin, US Army, Virginia

She married Frederick Houston Shockey III on October 17, 1998 in Seneca, KS. He survives of the home along with their two daughters, Alexis Shockey 21 years old and Emma Shockey 14 years old, both of the home.

Felicia earned her GED in 1997. Felicia graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Kansas State University in 2007. Felicia graduated from Washburn University in 2010 with her Masters in Social Work.

Felicia’s passion and commitment to America’s Veterans was based on her hardships as the loving daughter of a homeless Vietnam veteran and also the experiences she witnessed as a military spouse during her husband’s career.

Felicia was currently employed as a social worker for the Department of Veterans Affairs at the Colmery-O’Neil VA Behavioral Health Clinic since January of 2016. She was proud to be part of a caring and compassionate front line team dedicated to helping veterans in crisis. From 2014-2015, Felicia worked as a homeless veteran outreach social worker in El Paso, Texas at the El Paso VA Hospital. Felicia would go into the city of El Paso on a daily basis and work directly with homeless veterans; lining up community resources and worked hard to reconnect them with family members. Felicia was the Director of Social Services at Brandon Woods at Alvamar Nursing Home in Lawrence, KS from 2012-2014.

Felicia had a huge heart and was full of compassion, she never met a patient or person that she did not see hope in. Next to her family and friends, one of her greatest joys was helping others find the potential in themselves.

She enjoyed traveling, Germany, hiking, and the outdoors.

The family will greet those whose lives were touched by Felicia on Friday, August 24, 2018 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the (Felicia Shockey Legacy Fund) for the benefit of her daughters and they may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

The greatest gift that she gave to this world was her daughters Alexis & Emma and her legacy will continue to bless this world through them.
