George Hartpence

Funeral services for George W. Hartpence, 95, Lawrence will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 17, 2010 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.   Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery in Ottawa, Kansas.  He died April 13, 2010 at Rolling Hills Nursing Center in Topeka, Kansas.

George was born September 28, 1914 in rural Franklin County, KS the son of George and Sarah Belle (Jones) Hartpence.

He served his country in the Army Air Corp as Staff Sergeant during World War II, where he was stationed in Hawaii and worked as a propeller mechanic.

He worked at Douglas Aircraft and as a home builder in California. When he returned to Kansas he worked a number of years at Hercules Ammunition plant.  He also owned a used car business.

He was a member of First Christian Church in Lawrence and a life member of the VFW.  He was also an avid coin collector.

He married Ruth Aileen Myers on April 20, 1937 in Topeka, Kansas.  She survives of the home.

Other survivors include a daughter, LaWanda Fritzson of Topeka; a son, Doug and his wife Robin  Hartpence of Lawrence; a daughter-in-law, Tricia Hartpence of Baldwin;  six grandsons, Matthew Hartpence, Darin Fritzson and his wife, Jamie, Eric Fritzson, Tyler Hartpence, Connor Hartpence, Logan Hartpence; two step-granddaughters, Mallory and Reagan Burton and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his son, Roger; a granddaughter, Sara; and his six siblings.

The family will greet friends an hour before the service on Saturday at the mortuary.

Memorial contributions may be made to VFW; Heart of America Hospice or First Christian Church  and sent in care of the Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
