Helyn Hawkins

Funeral service for Helyn Hawkins, 88, Lawrence will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 12, 2009, at the St. Luke A.M.E. Church in Lawrence.   Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence.  She died on Thursday, June 4, 2009, at Pioneer Ridge Assisted Living in Lawrence.

She was born March 5, 1921, in Lawrence, the daughter of John C.Z. and Florence Murray Fishback.

Helyn obtained a beauty school license from Madame CJ Walker’s Beauty Shop in Kansas City, MO, and another license from Lawrence in 1947.  She enjoyed a long career at Vanity from 1960 through 2000 and worked at Hairport from 2000-2005.  She was a member of St. Luke AME and a 50 plus year member of the Siloam Chapter #10 Order of the Eastern Star

Helyn was preceded in death by her sister, Mary E. Townsend, on April 22, 2006.

She is survived by cousins, Arthur Frye and Jane Barnes both of Lawrence.

The family will greet friends an hour before the service at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to St. Luke A.M.E. and sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
