Henry (Heinrich) Winklmeier

Memorial services for Henry W. (Heinrich) Winklmeier, 80, Lawrence, KS will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, November 24, 2010, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence, KS.  Private inurnment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence.  He died on Saturday, November 20, 2010 at his home.

He was born on December 7, 1929 in Munich, Germany, the son of Heinrich and Elisabeth Mueckl Winklmeier. He was 24 years old when he moved to Lawrence from Germany to join his sister, Maria and her husband, Bob Rood in 1954.

In 1955, he was drafted into the U.S. Army.  He completed his training in Ft. Carson, CO and Ft. Bliss, TX.  He then served sixteen months in Wiesbaden, Germany, where he met his future wife, Rosemarie.  After his active duty, he moved back to Lawrence where he served for four years in the U.S. Army Reserves.

Henry was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing.  He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.

He worked for thirty years as an instrument operator at Farmland Industries in Lawrence.  He retired in 1989.

He was married to Rosemarie Grosse on May 14, 1957 in Wiesbaden, Germany.  She survives of the home.

Other survivors include two daughters; Sylvia Black and her husband, Jeff, of Lawrence, KS, Laurie Lassley and her husband, Scott, of Wichita, KS, a son, Donald Winklmeier, of Lawrence, KS, his sister, Maria Rood, of Lawrence, KS, and five grandchildren: Emily, Adriane and Rosemary Black and Logan and Abbey Lassley.  He also is survived by his brother-in-law, Manfred and wife, Hannelore Grosse, of Weinmar, Germany. He loved and enjoyed his dog, Benny.

The family suggests memorials in his name to the Douglas County Visiting Nurses, Rehabilitation and Hospice Care, or to the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Oncology Department and may be sent in care of the mortuary/
