Mass of Christian Burial for James Michael Self, 60, Lawrence will be held 10 a.m. Friday July 9, 2010 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.  Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.  Jim died July 5, 2010 at his home.

He was born on July 24, 1949 in Herington, KS the son of Marvin and Darlene (Will) Self.

Jim graduated from Topeka High School in 1967.  He attended the University of Kansas.  He was a long time employee as an automotive technician at Hafkemeyer Motors in Kansas City, MO.  He was involved in various ministries at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and School.  Jim was involved in helping with St. John’s Mexican Fiesta, Fall Dinners, Fish Frys, Parish Council and various other committees.  He also helped the University of Kansas School of Mechanical Engineering students with their race car projects.  He was a member of the KU Alumni Association, St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and SCCA Association.

He married Julia Saenz on May 2, 1981 in Great Bend, Kansas.  She survives of the home.

Other survivors include his mother, Darlene of Topeka; one son, James “Michael” Self, Lawrence; one daughter, Kathryn “Katie” Self, Lawrence; two brothers, Marvin and David Self, both of Topeka; one sister, Sue Hamilton, Knoxville, TN; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many many friends.  He was preceded in death by his father, Marvin in 1993.

The family will greet friends at 6 p.m. Thursday July 8, 2010 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary and a rosary will start at 7 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lawrence Memorial Hospital – Oncology Department or The University of Kansas School of Mechanical Engineering and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
