Funeral services for John H. ‘Jack” Denton, 78, Lawrence, KS will be at 11 a.m. Monday, December5, 2011 at the Lawrence Free Methodist Church. Private burial will be later at the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Topeka, KS. He died on Monday, November 28, 2011 at his home.
Jack was born on September 17, 1933 in Kansas City, MO, the son of Donald F. & Barbara Pollock Denton. He moved to Lawrence in 1967 from Topeka, KS.
Jack was a born-again believer and follower of the Lord Jesus Christ and enjoyed serving others. He loved being an usher, prayer warrior, and office volunteer.
Earlier, he attended Kansas State University and Pittsburg State University and was a U.S. Navy veteran.
Jack worked as an operator and later as a custodian at the Lawrence Paper Company from 1977-1999. From 1966 – 1977, he worked as a linotype operator for the Allen Press in Lawrence.
He was a member of the Lawrence Free Methodist Church and the Countryside TLC Group at the church. He enjoyed golfing and was also an avid swimmer.
He was the beloved husband of Ava Lea Davies Denton for 54 years beginning on March 22, 1958 in Junction City, KS. She survives of the home.
Jack was a devoted father to his two daughters, Barbara Ann and husband, Kenneth Guthery of Beattyville, KY, Susan Lea and husband, Hector Agosto of El Camino Village, CA, He loved and enjoyed his twin sister, Jane Warren, of Greeley, CO, and his sister, Barbara Gail Noe, of Topeka, KS. He was the proud Grandpa of his four grandchildren (Mason Dean Guthery, Hope Elizabeth Agosto, Ciera Briann Guthery, and Sarai Marie Agosto).
The family will greet friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.
The family suggests memorials in his name to the Lawrence Free Methodist Church or to Douglas County Visiting Nurses, Rehabilitation and Hospice Care and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
