Joseph Sabol entered this life on September 23, 1925 and departed this life on December 28, 2013. He was 88 years old.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Verona Sabol; his brothers Michael, Andrew (Rose), and Frank (Roma) Sabol; and his sisters Ann (Robert) Slaby, Mary (Robert) Reilly, and Ethel and Helen Sabol. He is survived by his loving wife of forty-five years, Barbara; his daughters Sandra Lee Woolman, Lisbeth Jean Sabol, and Barbara (Mark) Rosasco; his stepdaughters, Njeri Shomari and Frankie (Frank) Davis; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews.
After graduating from Nelson High School in Ohio, Joseph served as an air crewman in the Navy during World War II. He was stationed in Hawaii, teaching airborne radar procedures. Upon discharge and after a stint in the same mill in Cleveland, Ohio, where his father worked, and after sailing the Great Lakes as a seaman, he attended The Ohio State University, and later moved to Kansas City, where he worked as a laboratory technician at Proctor and Gamble. He was a graduate student at the University of Kansas and the University of Missouri at Kansas City (UMKC). He then held a joint appointment as assistant professor in UMKC’s Department of Geography and School of Business. When he left the University, he pursued a career in sales becoming a sales manager eventually retiring to farm in Upstate New York. He enjoyed ham radio (WOHBV). He moved from farm life to a retirement community in Washington, DC where he was active with his friends and neighbors in various volunteer activities and debating public policy and politics. During his retirement years he discovered photography and won an award for one of his nature photographs. He also edited an alternative health and environment newsletter. His retirement was interspersed with travel across the United States, to Moscow and to the home of his mother in Hungary. His final retirement years were spent in Lawrence, Kansas.
