A visitation for Joseph Levi Lewis, Sr., known as “Joe,” who touched many lives during his remarkable 93 years, will take place from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. Following this, a private family military graveside service will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence, paying tribute to his service to our country. Joe peacefully passed away on November 29, 2025, at LMH.
Born on December 18, 1931, in Fort Scott, Kansas, Joe was the son of Henry C. and Eula M. (Hogan) Lewis. He completed his education in Nevada, Missouri, and proudly served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during the Korean War, exemplifying the bravery and dedication we honor today. Joe spent his professional life as a Construction Superintendent at Garney Companies, where his leadership and commitment were evident in every project he undertook. Beyond his work, Joe embraced life with vigor—enjoying golf, fishing, and long drives through the beautiful countryside with his beloved wife. In a heartfelt union, Joe married Betty Gilbreth on October 29, 1953, in Eudora, Kansas, and they created a warm and loving home together. Joe and Betty recently celebrated their 72nd Wedding Anniversary on October 29, 2025. Betty, along with their daughter, Lisa Gay O’Neill; two sons, Joseph L. Lewis, Jr. (Kimberly), and Brian Scott Lewis (Cathi); seven cherished grandchildren; and 13 beloved great-grandchildren, continue to celebrate his legacy. He was preceded in death by his dear parents, brother Don, and sister Sharon.
The family invites you to honor Joe's memory by making a meaningful contribution in his name to Wounded Warriors or the American Heart Association, organizations that reflect his spirit of giving and compassion. Donations can be sent in care of the mortuary. Let us come together to celebrate a life well-lived and a heart that loved deeply.
