Joyce Mullenix, of Lawrence, passed away September 16th surrounded by family.
Joyce was born March 6, 1929, in McLouth, Kansas, to Earl and Mable Edmonds. She attended school in McLouth and graduated from Topeka High School and then attended Washburn University graduating from Stormont-Vail, School of Nursing in 1950.
Mrs. Mullenix worked at Watkins Hospital and later at Lawrence Memorial Hospital where she worked primarily in Obstetrics for many years. She completed her nursing career by becoming a school nurse which she greatly enjoyed, retiring in 1989.
She married Stan Mullenix on July 21, 1950, in St. Louis, Missouri. He preceded her in death in 2014. They raised four daughters together. Chris Johnson (Kenny) of Lawrence, Cindy Gilmore (Jack) of Phoenix, AZ, Sue Kanoho (Farrell), Fairfield, CA and Julie Halling (Andy) of Lawrence: fourteen grandchildren and thirty great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Mullenix was a fifty-year member of Plymouth Congregational Church. Her hobbies included sewing and embroidery as well making many photo albums that effectively chronicled her family’s history. Their home was the site of extended, wonderful family gatherings throughout their marriage.
She and her husband traveled extensively throughout the United States but especially enjoyed Rocky Mountain National Park hiking the trails together with their children and later their grandchildren.
A private family graveside service is planned for a later date.
Suggested memorials are Visiting Nurses and Ascend Hospice with contributions in her name sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary; 120 W 13th Street, Lawrence, Kansas 66044.
