A Celebration of Life for Judy (Sara Jewell) Greer Davis, 78, Lawrence, KS, will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 19, 2013 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. Private inurnment will be at a later date in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Topeka. She died on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at her home following a long battle with gynecological cancer.
Judy was born on January 8, 1935 in Dallas, TX, the daughter of William Thomas Bell Greer and Beulah Jones Greer. She was raised in Lorain, Ohio and Jackson, MI. She graduated from Jackson High School in 1952 and moved to Topeka, KS. There. She attended Washburn University, where she was a member of the Alpha Phi sorority and Pi Kappa Delta, the honorary forensic fraternity. She majored in English and Elementary Education and was a member of the Washburn Debate squad.
She was active in volunteer work in Topeka, KS and was a member of the Topeka Junior League, Alpha Phi Alumnae, president of Mrs. 20/30, and president of Randolph School PTA. She was also a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. After moving to Manhattan in 1966, Judy served on the Manhattan Airport Board and several United Way committees. She was the Drive Chairman for Riley County United Way in 1984. She was a member of the committee which wrote the grant for the formation of the Regional Crisis Center (an organization that provided assistance to victims of rape and domestic violence) and was selected to be their first Executive Director. Judy also served on the boards of Big Brothers-Big Sisters, Family Council, Kansas Association of Domestic Violence Programs and the Kansas Organization of Sexual Assault coalition.
She married Glen F. Davis on June 4, 1955 in Topeka, KS. He survives of the home.
In 1987, she and Glen moved to Lawrence. In Lawrence, she was a member of the GQ Chapter of the PEO Sisterhood and a volunteer at the Lied Center, Lawrence Memorial Hospital, and Ronald McDonald’s Family Room in Children’s Mercy Hospital, Small World and Audio Reader. She also volunteered at the Lied Center since 1997. The Davis’ have been supporters of the Dole Center and the Hall Center for several years. She worked as a pre-arranged funeral counselor at Warren-McElwain Mortuary from 1988-1991.
Survivors besides her husband, Glen include: three daughters, Cheryl Parsons (Steve) of Dallas, TX, Cathleen Gorby, of Olathe, KS, Diane Fox (Peter), of Wichita, KS’ two sons, Greg Davis (Laura), of Houston, TX, Geoffrey Davis (Julie), of Frisco, TX, thirteen grandchildren, one great granddaughter, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Jacquelyn Wright.
The family suggests memorials in her name to the LMH Endowment Association for the Oncology Department and to the Douglas County Visiting Nurses Rehabilitation and Hospice Care and may be sent in care of the Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
The family will greet friends from 5:30 – 7 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary.
Judy wished that her services would be a celebration of her life and would suggest that everyone wear bright colors.
