Mass of Christian burial for Leon “Lee” L. Carter, 91, Lawrence, KS will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, July 29, 2010 at Our Lady of the Wayside Church in Arlington Heights, IL. Burial will be in Memory Gardens in Arlington Heights, IL.
He died July 24, 2010 at Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community in Lawrence, KS. He has been a resident of Lawrence since June of 1992.
He was born March 19, 1919 in Spartanburg, SC the son of William Sims and Mary Elizabeth (Huntsinger) Carter.
He served his country during World War II in the US Navy from 1944-1946. He was a storekeeper on the USS Anthedon and USS Orion in the South Pacific. He worked as a master machinist for Parker-Hannifin Corp. for over 25 years.
He was a member of the International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers since 1953.
He married Adeline T. Pucilowski Bradley on October 22, 1949 in Crown Point, Indiana. She preceded him in death on April 2, 2001.
Other survivors include three daughters, Theresa “Teri” Maynard and husband, Bob of Lawrence, KS, Joan Herbst and husband, Peter of Arlington Heights, IL, Carol Edgeworth, of Casper, WY; 14 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Martha Kwiatt of Downers Grove, IL and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Jim Edgeworth, two brothers and three sisters.
The family suggests memorials in his name to Heart of America Hospice in Topeka, KS and may be sent in care of the Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence or to the Meadows Funeral Home in Rolling Meadows, Illinois.
