Graveside services for Lois A. Weldon, 64, of Lawrence, KS will be held Friday, February 12, 2021 at 10:30 am at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence. The family will greet family and friends on Thursday, February 11, 2021 from 5-7 p.m. at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. A celebration of life will be held this summer. She died February 6, 2021 at her home in Lawrence.
She was born October 23, 1956 in Lawrence, KS, the daughter of Charles Hanna and Opal (Melton) Hanna Folks. She married her one true love, Bruce Weldon, on August 5, 1978 at South Park in Lawrence, KS. Through their adventures in life, their love never changed and only continued to grow stronger.
Lois had a long career working in several clerical jobs at the University of Kansas. For the last 24 years before she retired in 2019, she was the Administrative Assistant at the Beach Center on Disability. She was instrumental in countless major projects including multi-million-dollar grants, book manuscripts, international correspondence, event planning, graphic design, office renovation, and more. She was honored as the KU Employee of the Month and was beloved by colleagues, doctoral students from across the world, and national/international visitors. She demonstrated incredible grace under pressure, especially in meeting grant deadlines.
Lois was civic-minded in her engagement in many community endeavors, including fund-raising for cancer treatment. She was an avid fan of her grandsons’ sports teams, as well as the Jayhawks, Chiefs, and Royals. She and Bruce travelled internationally with the Kansas Jayhawks Rugby Football Club and took many road trips in the U.S. to watch professional baseball games, marvel over historical sites, and enjoy their time together. They often travelled with a stuffed Jayhawk and took photos of it in unexpected places, including in front of the University of North Carolina and Duke basketball coliseums. She loved to knit and created many knitted treasures for her family and friends. Lois and Bruce were “regulars” at Johnny’s where they contributed mightily to the fun and fellowship of the extensive “Johnny’s family.”
Lois was beloved. All who knew her will sorely miss her loyal friendship, kindness, zest for life, and enlivening sense of humor.
In addition to being survived by her husband, other survivors include her daughters, Tina Peters (Billy Kelch II) of Andover, KS, and Courtney (Jason) Nowak of Lawrence, KS; her brother, Thomas (Barb) Hanna of Garland, Texas; and seven grandchildren.
The family suggests memorial contributions in her name to VNA Hospice or Lawrence Public Library and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary 120 W. 13 th St. Lawrence, KS 66044. Online condolences may be left at warrenmcelwain.com.
