Lowell E. Almon, Jr.

Memorial services for Lowell E. Almon, Jr., 80, Lawrence will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, March 3, 2018 at First Presbyterian Church in Lawrence. Inurnment will be in the Presbyterian Church Memorial Garden. He passed away Thursday, February 1, 2018 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Lowell was born June 5, 1937 in Chicago, IL the son of Lowell E. Almon, Sr. and Wilma (VanKirk) Almon. He and his sisters, Linda and Willow, grew up in and around the South Side of Chicago and Gary, IN.

On December 30, 1961, Lowell married Diane R. Cutler of Palos Park, IL, and in 1963 he began his 25-year career at Cutler Repaving, Inc. The business relocated from Chicago to Lawrence in 1967, and so did the Almon family.

Lowell was a member of First Presbyterian Church (FPC) and served on its session and board of trustees for many years. He also taught Sunday school and participated in the Stephen Ministry program, as both a lay caregiver and a Stephen Leader.

On April 13, 1987, Diane Almon lost her long battle with breast cancer. Throughout her illness, Lowell’s loving and dedicated care allowed Diane to receive treatment at home as much as possible instead of at a medical facility.

Lowell met Linda Spicer Judd at FPC in 1988, and they were married on October 1 ^st of that same year.

Lowell was a man of many talents and a jack of all trades. Besides having a head for business and being the president of an asphalt paving company, Lowell was a welder, a machinist and a mechanic; he enjoyed woodworking and making furniture. Lowell was a journeyman bricklayer in his youth, and one of his specialties was building chimneys. Lowell could design, build, plumb, wire and roof for a new construction or remodeling projects. Lowell also had a passion for smoking briskets and turkeys – especially for the holidays and for special events.

Two jobs that Lowell took pride in during his later years were laying brick to build Baldwin High School and being a nanny to his two oldest grandchildren.

Lowell was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2003, but the symptoms had begun to manifest several years earlier. Because of Linda’s tireless care and devotion to Lowell, he was able to live at home until his last days.

Lowell passed away on February 1, 2018. He is survived by his wife, Linda, of the home.

Other survivors include his son, Mark (Eileen) of Lenexa, KS; grandchildren, Jacob, Addison, McKenna and Bennett; and his daughter, Lisa, of Austin, TX.

Memorial Contributions may be made in his name to First Presbyterian Church or the National Parkinson Foundation and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
