Graveside services for Madeleine J. Schehrer, 81, Lawrence, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 2, 2022 at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery, 1600 Oak Hill Avenue, Lawrence. Madeleine passed away on Thursday, July 28, 2022, at her home.
Madeleine was born on November 6, 1940 in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of Paul and Doris (Davis) Milberger. She graduated from Lawrence High School in 1958 and then attended the University of Kansas.
She married Robert A. Schehrer on July 25, 1959 at St. John the Evangelist Church in Lawrence. He survives of the home. Other survivors include daughters, Amy Byers and husband Tim, Leawood, Elaine Randel and husband Randy, Lenexa, and Nancy Jones and husband Joe, Lawrence. She has eight grandchildren, Robert Randel and wife Stephanie, San Antonio, Justin Randel, Brooklyn, NY, Joshua Randel and wife Bri, Olathe, Nicole Volz and husband Brandon, Lawrence, Abby Lagemann and husband Hunter, Kansas City, MO, Ashley Sanchez and husband Carlos, Shawnee, Maddie Laughlin and husband Tim, Olathe, and Cody Jones, Lawrence and 9 great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Paul Milberger, Jr. and a grandson, Jacob Randel.
Madeleine was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority in the 1970s where she served as president. She had a love for American Saddlebred horses and showed her horses in many regional horse shows, including the American Royal in Kansas City. She was one of the founders of the Sunflower Benefit Horse Show in Lawrence which benefited the O’Connell Youth Ranch and Cottonwood Inc. She also raised and showed canaries and authored a book “How to Care for Your Canary.”
She shared a love for antiques with her daughter, Amy, and they co-owned an antique booth “Mother and Me Antiques” in downtown Lawrence. Madeleine also enjoyed spending time with her family, sewing, gardening, Chiefs games, and her annual trip to Disney World with Robert.
Madeleine embraced all of life and saw beauty in all of God’s creatures and the environment. Memorial contributions may be made in Madeleine’s name to The Humane Society of the United States or National Parks Conservation Association and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.
