Makenna Rose Bartel-Heaney, formerly of Leawood, residing with her husband in Overland Park, passed peacefully in the early evening of April 22, 2013 at her home with loved ones surrounding her after a two year battle with cancer. Makenna was born October 19, 1984 and so began a lifelong passion for the arts, beginning at Nativity Parish and leading her to graduate from The University of Kansas Metalsmithing Program within the School of Fine Arts. Upon graduation, Makenna successfully started her own Jewelry Design and Fabrication business. Makenna’s business provided her the opportunity to explore another passion, travel, as she was accepted to renowned art shows across the USA. She also displaying her talent in local galleries within the Kansas City area.
Makenna is survived by her husband, James D. Heaney, Jr.; parents Cindy and Dave Bartel; sister Devon Bartel: and forever-faithful dachshund Lexi.
A private “green” burial will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery on Wednesday, April 24, 2013. The family welcomes you to an open house at the home of Dave and Cindy (12204 Reinhardt Ln., Leawood) to express your condolences from 4-6 p.m. on April 24th. A celebration of Makenna’s life will be held on a future date to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent in Makenna’s name to: KU Endowment, PO Box 928, Lawrence, KS 66044-0928. Per Makenna’s wishes, the funds donated, along with her own contributions, will fund a metalsmithing scholarship in her name to a worthy student in order to continue her legacy and love of the arts.
