Marcia passed away Monday, April 8, 2019 at her home in Lawrence.
Marcia was born September 25, 1937 in Yates Center, the daughter of Alfred and Mildred (Light) Opperman and younger sister of Maurita. She married Rex Parsons and they raised two children, living in Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona. She was a wonderful mother. She tirelessly attended every baseball game, softball game, play, and musical concert. She advised but didn’t dictate.
Marcia was a voracious reader of fiction across many genres, from Nora Roberts to Rex Stout and from Harry Potter to Jane Eyre. She loved animals and her many dogs and cats over the years were extremely important to her. Maybe above all, she was a die-hard KU basketball fan. Her freshman year at the University of Kansas was Wilt Chamberlain’s first year to play and she followed the team throughout the years, even when, in the pre-ESPN world, that meant only an occasional radio broadcast and in recent years, attending games at Allen Field House.
She hated things that were sad and it is fitting that her death was not sad. She passed away peacefully at home, seated on the sofa, Kindle in hand and Hallmark Movies and Mysteries on the TV.
Family and friends are invited to gather to remember Marcia in the Lafferty meeting room at the Fredonia Public Library on Friday, April 19th from 11:00am to 12:30pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Fredonia Public Library and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.
