Margaret L. Angino

Margaret Angino, 90, passed away peacefully July 12 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. She was constantly surrounded by her loving family through her journey to meet her blessed Jesus. It was her request not to have a memorial service; however, information regarding a gathering of friends and family to celebrate her beautiful life will be announced at a later date.

Margaret was born on January 9, 1933, in Winsted, Connecticut to Raymond and Catherine (Durr) Lachat. She went to high school with her future husband and soulmate Ernest Angino whom she married June 26, 1954. Both delighted in the fact that while they didn’t care much for each other in school, something sparked the summer after Ernie’s Freshman year at college. Following his graduation, they wed and moved to Mississippi for his first professional job. A desire to attend graduate school brought them to Lawrence, KS for Ernie to attend KU. Margaret was his biggest supporter throughout graduate school spending days working professionally at the Kansas Union and many evenings typing papers, reports, a thesis, and a dissertation for Ernie on a manual typewriter from the 50’s. During this time, the couple welcomed their first child.

Following KU the couple moved to College Station, Texas where Ernie took a position at Texas A&M University. In 1965 Ernie accepted a position at Kansas University. Margaret, always Ernie’s biggest fan and supporter, returned to Lawrence with him ready to embark on a beautiful life in Lawrence which included a second child, numerous friends, receipt of her own degree in accounting, and a professional career as an accountant.

Margaret was an avid cookbook collector and was well known for incredible skills as a gourmet cook. Her gatherings, banquets, and parties were legendary amongst her friends. She loved to entertain and host her friends.

Most of all Margaret lived for her family. Ernie referred to her as “his gift from God”. Her children, granddaughter, grandsons, and great grandson all adored her. She was their anchor. Her most recent great love was her great grandson.

Margaret is survived by her husband Ernest Angino, her sister Edna Lachat of Winsted, Connecticut, her daughters Cheryl (Gregg) Holcomb and Kimberly (Norman) Jennings both of Lawrence, her granddaughter Margaret “Maggie” (Mike) Fonkert, her grandsons Christopher and Benjamin Jennings, and her great grandson James Fonkert. She is also survived by several lifelong friends from a decades old sewing group whom she treasured deeply.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her Aunt Margaret Durr after whom Margaret was named and loved deeply, and her brother Paul Lachat.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff of Neuvant House and LMH east wing 2nd floor ICU for their support, kindness, and professionalism throughout Margaret’s journey home.
