Marian Brown

A Mass of Christian Burial for Marian M. Brown, 82, Lawrence will be held 10 a.m., Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Lawrence.  Burial will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Leavenworth National Cemetery in Leavenworth, KS.  She died December 20, 2011 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Marian was born on December 11, 1929 in Kansas City, KS the daughter of James and Alberta Sanders.

She attended the Conservatory of Music in Kansas City, MO under the direction of Madame Olga Sacerdote, she later became a professional opera singer.  She also attended the Aline Jefferson School of Beauty, she had a salon in Leavenworth and then moved to Lawrence in 1977, and was owner of an elegant salon she named Marian’s Hair Place.

She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, a former NAACP president, a member of the Older Women’s League, Mother-to-Mother, Department of Aging, and the American Legion.  She was on the Kansas Board of Cosmetology, as well as the board of Meals on Wheels.  She was a member of the LesNoveletts in Leavenworth, and taught cosmetology at the women’s prison in Lansing.

She married Walter L. Brown, Sr. on July 3, 1955 in Platte City, MO.  He preceded her in death September 25, 2001.

Her angels include one son, Walter L. Brown, Jr., Topeka, KS; two grandchildren, Jeannette R. Parker, Lawrence and Walter L. Brown III, Lubbock, Texas; four great-grandchildren, Aspen, Robert, Blyss and Braylee; one sister, Clarice Conner, in AZ; one brother, Hiram, Kansas City, KS; numerous nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by four brothers, James, Robert, Clarence, and William.

The family will greet friends from 5 – 6:30 p.m. on Monday, December 26, 2011 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Marian M. Brown Memorial Fund and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
