Marilyn Dee Good was born on October 5, 1936 in Lawrence, Ks. Recently hospitalized at St. Luke’s for routine octogenarian issues she and the Lord decided to do a permanent check-out. After reciting the “Lord’s Prayer” and then the “Rock Chalk Jayhawk” chant, she transitioned to heaven on April 7, 2023 surrounded by all of her family.
Marilyn spent her life in Douglas County, growing up on a farm south of Lawrence with her parents, Elmer and Dorothy (Breithaupt) Wintermantel and younger brother Charles. She attended one room schools, Range Line and Excelsior/Exline, later graduating from Baldwin High School.
In 1952 she met Don Bachelor at the Overbrook fair and they were married on November 27, 1954. They moved to Lawrence where they raised their three kids Joan, David and saving the best for last, Susan. They later divorced and she married Max Good in 1974.
Putting her efficient organizational and management skills to work, Marilyn spent 33 years working for Neil McCaskey at Maupintour Travel Agency. Her position allowed her to enjoy multiple international trips to numerous countries and continents.
She was a member of the EHU (Extension Homemakers Unit), Worden United Methodist 4H as a child and sang in her high school and Lawrence church choir.
Marilyn was known by all for her hospitable spirit, sense of humor and incredible cooking! Hosting large family gatherings or lunch for a few, always seemed effortless. In the rare instances there was anything leftover, she sent you home with a carryout bag for later. Her potato salad was famous! While she did not keep the recipe a secret, no one has been able to master her artful rendition of the family favorite (except her daughters) 😊. Everyone knew her bowl at the church potlucks and if you were a first timer, word trickled down the line to “get some of Marilyn’s potato salad”.
If she wasn’t cooking you might find her at the sewing machine creating clothes, Halloween costumes, pillows, or making a gift for others. She even helped kids with sewing lessons. She loved painting, arts and crafts or decorating her home. On nice evenings you might also find her fishing with family at the pond or working in her vegetable or flower garden.
She loved attending all of her grandkids events whether it be, drill team, marching band, softball, baseball, basketball or soccer. She loved KU basketball, Kansas City Royals and the Chiefs.
Preceding her in death are her parents Elmer and Dorothy, husbands Donald and Max, brother Charles and son David.
She is survived by daughters, Joan McNeal (Patrick) of Overland Park KS and Susan Kruger (Robert) of Baldwin City KS. Five grandchildren, Emily Kline (Andy), Matthew McNeal (Courtney Smith), Christopher Bachelor, Jedidiah Kruger and Cole Kruger (Kylee) and 4 great grandchildren: Harrison and Everett Kline, Wyatt Bremer, and Kohen Kruger.
