Marilyn Sue Malson

November 24, 1940 — July 3, 2025

Marilyn Sue Malson, 84, of Lawrence, Kansas, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2025. A beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Marilyn’s life was marked by faith, compassion, and a deep love for her family.

She was born on November 24, 1940, to Hugh and Vivian Braum in Topeka, Kansas. Her early years were spent with her parents and brother Mike on the family farm in Richland, Kansas. In 1956, she married Bob Steele, and together in 1960, they welcomed a daughter, Deborah Sue Steele. Though that chapter eventually ended in 1979, life had more love in store. On September 30, 1987, Marilyn married James “Jim” Malson. They shared a life filled with laughter, companionship, and enduring devotion until Jim’s passing in 2017.

Starting her law enforcement career in 1965, Marilyn paved the way for future generations of women. She made history as the first female deputy sheriff in Douglas County and later as the county’s first female captain — roles she carried with quiet strength, integrity, and humility. Her leadership earned the deep respect of all who served alongside her. She continued her commitment to justice through her work with the Franklin County District Attorney’s office until her retirement.

Marilyn’s greatest legacy was the kindness she shared with others. Known for her generous spirit and her ability to see the good in everyone, she touched countless lives — not only through her public service, but in the simple, everyday moments that made people feel truly seen and valued. A godly woman of wisdom and steady faith, she offered encouragement and unconditional love to all who knew her.

She spent many joyful years on a farm just outside Ottawa, Kansas, where she and Jim built a life full of love and cherished memories. Her passing brings sorrow, but also comfort in knowing she is once again by his side.

Marilyn is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Deborah Nichols; brother, Mike Braum (Donna), her stepdaughters, Cindy Watts, Sue Nilges (Greg), Mary Baise (Russ); her nine grandchildren Jessica Nichols Shult (Eric), Erica Herzog (Jake), Ryan Watts (Sheri), Korey Bowden (Dan), Jennifer Baise, Abby Robertson (Masen), Kristen Culley, Kaycee Westhoff (Colton), Marla Riggs (Shannon) and fifteen great-grandchildren.

Though she will be deeply missed, Marilyn’s legacy of love, faith, and grace will continue to live on in the many hearts she touched. She is now at peace in the arms of her Savior.
