Marion “Arkie” D. Vaughn

Graveside Services for Marion D. Vaughn, 93 of Lawrence, KS will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 14, 2021, at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence, KS. The family will greet friends from 6 – 8 p.m. on Monday, September 13, 2021, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044

Marion passed away on Thursday, September 9, 2021, surrounded by his family.

Arkie was born January 1, 1928, in Elk City, KS, the son of Raymond and Miriam (Farmer) Vaughn.

Arkie’s survivors include his children; David Vaughn, Sandra Hilt, Tammara Capps, grandchildren; Heather Henson, Spencer Hilt, Meghan Rogers, Blair Capps, Grant Capps, Madison Vaughn, Hayden Steiner, Hannah Vaughn and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Kenneth, and Raymond Vaughn, grandson Christian Hilt and wife, Janet in 2019

Vaughn played basketball at the University of Kansas and Washburn University. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta at Washburn. He earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Washburn, his masters from Emporia State and partial PhD from Oklahoma State University.

He was an Officer in the Korean War and served honorably until the war had ended. He made lifelong friends that continued well after the war. He married Shirlie Vaughn and he began his career as a collegiate coach at Pratt Junior College and Fort Scott Community college where he produced several all American’s. He also served as an Honorary Basketball Coach at the University of Kansas.

After retiring from coaching Arkie transitioned to the Savings and Loan industry where he served as President to Lawrence Building and Loan, Lawrence Savings Association, Lawrence Federal, Columbia Savings. He served as President of the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, was an advisor to Regan, the Treasury Secretary.

Vaughn enjoyed following KU sports, living in Estes Park, Colorado, gardening and reading.

He loved his family, loved his job, and believed in the American Dream.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Child Neurology Foundation for Leigh’s Disease and Veterans Community Project and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
