Marjorie Lou (Folks) Black

d. December 7, 2022

Marjorie Lou (Folks) Black passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones, on December 7, 2022. She was 93 years old.

Marge was born in October 1929 to Guy and Eunice (Manter) Folks as the youngest of six children, raised on a farm. Marge attended Riverside, a one-room schoolhouse, and Liberty Memorial High School in Lawrence, KS. Then she attended Lawrence Business School. Marge worked at Drake’s Bakery and Pippert’s Auto Parts Store.

At Pippert’s, she met the love of her life (James T. Black) while he was delivering parts to the store. They were married on November 6, 1948. Shortly after, they started a business, Lawrence Freight Line. Their family included four children, Stan, Jim, Brad, and Nancy. In 1964 they created a second business, B.C.& R. Storage Co. Marge and Jim were married 57 years before his death in 2006.

Marge was an avid bowler, golfer, and member of the American Business Women’s Association. Marge and Jim loved to travel and wintered for many years in Texas. Marge loved family reunions and never missed a chance to gather, even when her health was wavering. She was gifted with a memory for details, including names and family history. She loved watching the Jayhawks, Royals, and KC Chiefs. Marge enjoyed the community of friends and neighbors at Pioneer Ridge for the past three years.

Marge is survived by four children: Stan (LaDene), Jim (Debra), Brad & Nancy Rowland (Neil); six grandchildren: Aaron Black (Maria), Amy Miller (Kevin), Sheila Gonser (Nate), Lindsay Black, Daniel Rowland & Mark Rowland; and seven great-grandchildren: Blaine & Ashley Miller; Katelyn, Emily & Gabe Gonser; Jake & Justin Black.

Marge was preceded in death by her husband Jim; siblings Virginia Ayers, Herb Folks, Kathryn Holloway, Richard Folks, John Folks; and grandson: Anthony Black (AJ).

Folks Road in Lawrence was named after Marge’s parents, whose farm was adjacent to that road.
