Martha was born on December 9, 1936 in Lawrence, KS, the daughter of James Willis and Nellie (Yates) Holmes. She attended Lawrence public schools and graduated from Liberty Memorial High School. While a student at the University of Kansas she and fellow student Clarence Buller met, and several years later they were married in the Trinity Episcopal Church on June 4, 1960. She is survived by Clarence; daughter Jennifer Lynn Buller, Lawrence; son David D. Buller and his wife, Debra, Raytown, MO; and sister, Caroline Holmes Miller, Huntsville, AL.
Martha was a homemaker, living most of her life in Lawrence. For the past 34 years she lived in the same neighborhood, wherein she developed many friendships. She was happy to watch and even in some ways to participate in the lives of neighborhood children whom she came to regard as her honorary grandchildren. More than once she was the car driver helping one of the neighborhood mothers get a child to medical attention. She also was able to hold and cradle one of the honorary great grandchildren. Martha also was interested in the care of wildlife, particularly injured and/or orphaned small animals and birds. For a while she maintained an aviary in her 2920 Lawrence Avenue backyard. Occasionally birds that had been nurtured back to health and independence returned to sit at a windowsill, perhaps for an additional feeding. Martha also volunteered at WildCare.
The latter part of Martha’s life was encumbered by Alzheimer’s Disease. For much of that time she was cared for by her family but during the past year she came under the expert care of Garden Terrace where she passed away peacefully while asleep.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Garden Terrace, Overland Park, KS and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13 th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.
