Mass of Christian Burial for Mary Ann Schopper, 91, Eudora, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 9, 2021 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Eudora. Burial will follow in Holy Family Catholic Cemetery. The Rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, December 8, 2021 with a visitation to follow until 8 p.m. at the Warren-McElwain Mortuary – Eudora Chapel. She died December 3, 2021 at Homestead in Eudora.

Mary Ann Schopper was born April 9, 1930 in Eudora, KS. She graduated from Eudora High School. She attended Saint Margaret’s Nursing School graduating with her Registered Nurse degree in 1953.

She was a Nurse at Scripps Hospital in La Jolla, California 1954-57, then to Steamboat Springs, Colorado from 1958-59, until her brother Edward’s death in a car accident in 1959. At that time she took on the job of raising his four children Annette 3 years old, John 2 years old, Mary Theresa 1, and Mark 6 months old a huge undertaking but never wavering in her resolve to honor her brother in this way.

She worked part time nights at Lawrence Memorial Hospital eventually becoming school nurse for the Eudora Public School.

After her kids were grown she worked at Presbyterian Manor in Lawrence and the Eudora Nursing Center. She headed up the LINK program for St. John’s Church in Lawrence for many years.

Her many hobbies included ballroom dancing, which she loved and studied at Arthur Murray Dance Studio in California, years of gardening on her rural estate in Eudora, and travel.

She traveled extensively in her retirement to Europe, South America, and the Holy Land on Pilgrimages as she sought to enrich her deep faith life by visiting the sites of Christ and the Saints.

She is survived by her children, Annette (Peter Bock), John, Mary (Gary Dunlap), Mark (Vickie), 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren plus many nieces and nephews and her sister, Rose Cordry.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Helen Schopper, brothers, Edward, Carrol, and George and sisters, Marcella, Dolorosa, and Alberta; great grandson, Colin Mosley.

The family suggest memorials in Mary Annn’s name to Family Promise or the Lawrence Humane Society and may be sent in care of the Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.
