Mattie Mae Turner

Funeral services for Mattie Mae Turner, 78, Lawrence will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.  The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. prior to the service at the mortuary.  The burial will follow the service at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence.  Mattie passed away March 9, 2023, at her home.

She was born May 5, 1944, in Hollandale, Mississippi, the daughter of Asrie “Doc” and Rosie Washington Hunter.

She was a hairdresser for years and also worked at the Kmart Distribution Center.

Mattie enjoyed spending time with family, gardening, shopping, traveling, and cooking.  She also wrote song lyrics.

She married Aaron Turner in 1962 in Hollandale, Mississippi and he survives of the home.

Other survivors include her sons, Aaron Turner, Jr., Asrie Turner, and Ivory Turner all of Lawrence; grandchildren, Jasmine Turner, LaTroy Turner, Tamika Turner, Kala Turner, Ashanti Turner and Denzel, Turner, 17 great-grandchildren; her brother, Eugene Hunter of Lawrence and sister, Georgia Hunter of Cordova, Tennessee, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, best friend, Brenda Hamilton and Linda Gray.  She was preceded in death by her siblings, Jerry Hunter, Sr, James Barfield, Osbey Hunter, Rosie Little and Irene Lane.
