Memorial services for Melba Marie Barton Still, R.N. age 96, from Lawrence will be private. Mrs. Still passed quietly in her home on Thursday, June 15, 2017.
Melba was born December 4 th , 1920 in Dexter Missouri the daughter of Travis and Vero Barton.
She graduated from Amarillo Texas High in 1938, graduated from the Methodist School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse in 1941, served in the Army Air Corp. and earned her Flight Nurse Wings and was honorably discharged as a 1 st Lieutenant in 1945. She then worked as a nurse for Kansas University Watkins Hospital and a school nurse for the Lawrence Unified District 497 until she retired in 1990.
Mrs. Still was a member of the First Methodist Church and active in Good Fellowship Circle. She was a fifty-year member of Laureate Beta Chapter of Beta Signa Phi Sorority. She was also a member of the American Legion and Auxiliary and the Kansas Retired Teachers Association.
She married Robert M. Still, Navy Flight Instruction and Test Pilot, Architect Contractor Builder, in Amarillo, Texas on August 31 st 1944. Robert and daughter, Judith Anne preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Robert M. Still Junior, a daughter, Susan Marie and Roger Allen, a granddaughter, Shelley Gehrke and two great grandchildren, Whitney and Carter.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to the Visiting Nurses, the American Legion or the Lawrence Humane Society may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
